What is a miniature reed switch

The so-called switch is to make the circuit open or open, so in addition to the mechanical switches, relays, transistors, etc. used before, there is also a kind of reed switch, also called a magnetic reed switch. A miniature reed switch (magnetic reed switch) is an electrical switch operated by an applied magnetic field. It was invented by Walter B. Ellwood of Bell Telephone Laboratories in 1936, and he himself applied for a patent in the United States on June 27, 1940, with the patent number 2264746. The basic type is to seal two magnetic reeds in the glass tube. Although the two are overlapped, there is a small gap between them. When the external magnetic field will make the two magnetic reeds contact, and then conduct. Once the magnet is pulled away from the switch, the reed switch will return to its original position.

Since the reeds of the reed switch are sealed in the glass tube, the reeds will not be corroded by the atmosphere. Compared with the traditional electronic switch, the reed switch’s unique airtight sealing structure prevents the reed switch from discharging when the switch is closed.

An important characteristic of reed switches is sensitivity, which determines how much magnetic field is needed to drive work. Sensitivity is measured by the AT value. The AT value is the product of the number of turns of the coil and the coil current. The typical pull-in value range of commercial-grade reed switches is 10 to 60 AT. The smaller the AT value, the better the sensitivity of the reed switch. In the same way, the smaller the miniature reed switch, the more sensitive it is to the magnetic field.
